| Enlivening consciousness by david | |
I’m curious about consciousness. From what I heard, when we engage in Transcendental Meditation, one goes through layers of the mind and achieves unity at the bottom. I’m curious to know what impure consciousness is. It sounds like we’re going from a world of diversity, with difference, down to a world of no difference. But the world is full of difference, and that’s not necessarily bad.
No, it’s so beautiful! There’s diversity and unity. In the human being, if you raise up this consciousness, and expand it, you appreciate diversity much more. They say, “The world is as we are.” You start unfolding more and more of that, and the world looks better and better and better. The enjoyment of doing increases, increases. You appreciate people way more; you appreciate all those things.
When you enliven consciousness, it’s like ramping up a light. And negative things start to recede: that’s what’s getting away from. Negativity, they say, is just like darkness. So you see what darkness is, and you realize darkness isn’t really anything; it’s the absence of something. And you turn on the light, and it goes. But sunlight doesn’t remove negativity. But this light of consciousness removes it like sunlight removes darkness. And those things start to recede, little by little by little.
When I started meditating, two weeks after I started—I’d had this anger before I started meditation—two weeks later, my wife comes to me and says, “What’s going on”—because I took out this anger on her. And I said, “What are you talking about?” And she said, “This anger: Where did it go?” And it lifted. I had anxieties and fears, and those things start lifting—like this, as I said, “suffocating rubber clown suit” starts dissolving—this clown suit of negativity that keeps us from this freedom. It’s a thing.
Now this is my experience. And for me, that feeling of these things lifting made filmmaking way easier. This business has so much pressure in it, it isn’t funny. And that pressure, with this inner happiness, inner strength, inner energy coming up—it’s like a protection. It’s almost that life becomes more and more like a game. It’s very beautiful.
